Glika Nera Beach
Sfakia
Multimedia Map Description

How to get

Nestled between Loutro and Chora Sfakion, Sweetwater Beach is a renowned spot in Sfakia celebrated for its tranquility. The name, translating to «Sweet Waters», hints at its allure.

Unique Beach Feature

The beach features a pebbly shore with gentle waters, thanks to the sheltering mountains that flank the bay, ensuring calm seas. With a modest stretch of about 500–600 meters, it offers a gradual descent into the sea, quickly giving way to deeper waters.

Near the majestic White Mountains, a remarkable phenomenon occurs. Melting snow cascades down to Glika Nera Beach, nourishing tamarisk trees amidst the rocky terrain. These trees thrive on the mountain waters, offering cool shade to beachgoers during the hottest parts of the day. Notably, in 2003, this beach was acclaimed as the most picturesque in Crete.

Beach Amenities

Glika Nera Beach offers a minimal set-up for visitors. Among the few facilities is a coastal tavern, quaintly situated on a jetty, where diners can savor freshly caught grilled fish while enjoying the scenic view of Glika Nera. While on occasion a queue may form due to its popularity, these instances are infrequent. It’s advisable for beachgoers to bring a basic supply of food and water. The availability of sun loungers and umbrellas is limited, so early arrival is recommended to secure these comforts.

Seaside Haven

Despite its less-than-ideal location and a lack of abundant attractions, Glika Nera Beach draws visitors with its natural allure. Towering behind is the majestic Lefka Ori range, reaching heights of up to 500 meters, while the pristine waters of the Libyan Sea stretch out ahead. This scenic area offers a tranquil escape from the bustling crowds typically found at other vacation spots.

Within a 2–10 km radius of Glika Nera, one can find several points of interest:

  • ·       Loutro Village by the Sea: Nestled against the Libyan Sea coastline, this remote hamlet is accessible solely via the ocean or a mountain path. Characterized by its stark white houses set against mountainous terrains, this spot offers a serene pebble beach and the remnants of an ancient fort atop a hill. Nightlife and large retail outlets are non-existent here, but the tranquil sea and pristine environment more than compensate for it.
  • ·       A unique place with a distinctive vibe and lifestyle, Sfakia Village offers a chance to relax in a quaint cove against a mountain backdrop and sample the famous Sfakian pies.
  • ·       Often compared to the Samaria Gorge for its beauty, Aradena is less known among travelers. The village of the same name was abandoned in the mid-20th century due to familial feuds, with inhabitants fleeing for their safety. Today, the once-bustling village is a quiet spot with preserved ancient houses and a Byzantine church.

Situated on Crete’s southern coast, Sweetwater Beach is not the most accessible. It’s 75 km from Chania, 65 km from Rethymno, and just 2 km from Chora Sfakion. Here’s how to get there:

  • ·       Ferry Ride: The easiest method is by taking a ferry from Chora Sfakion or Loutro. These ferries run several times daily and the journey takes about 20 minutes.
  • ·       Hiking Trail: For the more adventurous, there’s a hiking path along the E4 trail starting from either Chora Sfakion or Loutro. The hike from Chora Sfakion is more straightforward and takes around 30 minutes to reach the beach. The trail from Loutro is suited for those who are confident with heights and takes about an hour. Despite some effort needed, these trails are safe and well-marked.
  • ·       By Car:Drive to the Hora Sfakion-Anopoli route and park at an ad-hoc parking area. From there, trek the mountainous path to reach Glika Nera Beach. The hike is challenging; carry water, wear a hat, and use sunscreen. The beach is approximately 1.5 km away from the road, with a descent time of 30–40 minutes.

Note that the last ferry service from Glika Nera to Hora Sfakion departs at 5:30 PM, but schedules are subject to change.

Tips

·       If you’re uncomfortable with nudism, consider avoiding the eastern side of Glika Nera, as it’s popular among naturists. Otherwise, there are plenty of other areas on the beach to enjoy.

·       The beach is covered with pebbles, so wearing protective water shoes is a smart choice to navigate comfortably.

·       Since there’s a limited supply of sun loungers, bringing your own towel is advisable. An umbrella can also enhance your comfort. Don’t forget to pack some water to stay hydrated.

·       The waters by Glika Nera’s shores are notably cooler compared to other beaches in Crete. This is attributed to the underground springs of mountain water that flow into the sea.

·       When trekking the paths to the beach, caution is advised. Mountain goats can cause rockslides. It is advised not to bring small children on these paths.
